Hong Kong Stars Cafe is a movie-themed cafe at Jalan Besar
Fans of Cantonese cuisine and Hong Kong cinema will find much to like about Hong Kong Stars Cafe, a newish eatery at Jalan Besar.
With its old-school interiors, pictures of Hong Kong celebrities, and Cantopop classics on the speakers, you can tell the space here is constructed to evoke nostalgia for the heydays of Hong Kong’s popular culture.
The food here falls squarely within the category of Cantonese cuisine.
If you’re in the mood for dim sum, you’ve got classics such as Signature Siew Mai ($6.80) and Shrimp Dumpings ($6.80). Better yet, we hear that all the dim sum items here are made by hand!
You can also enjoy their Steamed Salted Egg Custard Buns ($6.80), which came piping hot with a molten liu sha filling.
It’s not Cantonese food without some roasted delights, and thankfully, Hong Kong Stars Cafe has a good selection of them. These include Roasted Pork Belly ($12.80), BBQ Honey Pork ($12.80), and Roasted Duck ($13). You can choose to enjoy these meats with either rice or noodles—but we recommend the latter, as we found them wonderfully springy and eggy.
These noodles can also be enjoyed with the classic Handmade Wanton Noodles ($12). We thoroughly enjoyed the packed, juicy, and well-seasoned the wonton here were, and could see ourselves being satisfied with just this plate of noodles and dumplings.
For something heartier, we suggest you opt for one of the “HK Star Sets”, which are essentially rice and noodle dishes that come with a drink of your choice. We managed to try the Yangzhou Fried Rice ($12.80), which came with a massive portion of egg fried rice.
