I pack rotis and snacks for maha’s lunch box. She always asks for mayo or ketchup for dipping. I usually make my eggless mayo for her. This time I also made homemade ketchup so I can put it in her lunch box. This recipe is so fast to make, it take less than 30 mins to make. You put everything in a sauce pan and heat it together. Thats it.

Even though there are so many popular brands of tomato ketchup available, making it your own is satisfying. I am not saying that I never buy tomato ketchup from stores anymore, but it is worth to make it at home. It is not that hard too, just few ingredients and you are good to go. Making ketchup at home is easy and simple. The ingredients which I have used in this recipe creates a close to perfect ketchup recipe. You get the rich, sweet, tangy taste of the ketchup. Use best quality fresh tomatoes for making ketchup, add the powders spices like garlic and onion powder for flavour. You can definitely add more or less sugar and vinegar to get balanced taste.

I used black pepper powder in this for slight spicy note. But you can use red chilli powder, if you prefer it more spicy. This homemade ketchup can be stored for over 15 days in fridge. Meanwhile check my pink sauce as well.

Homemade Tomato Ketchup Ingredients

Tomato – Use best quality fresh tomatoes for making ketchup. I prefer using slightly sweet variety tomatoes for making ketchup. Instead of using fresh tomatoes, you can use store bought tomato puree as well.

Sugar – Sugar is one of the main ingredient in tomato ketchup. Depending on the the tomato variety you use, you might need to adjust sweetness. You can replace sugar with jaggery, but it may change the colour of the sauce.

Spices – garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper powder, red chilli powder are the basic spice powders used.

Flavourings – I like to add some mustard powder or mustard sauce in tomato ketchup for added flavour.

Vinegar – vinegar helps to balance the taste of the ketchup. You can add more or less to taste. Vinegar helps with preserving the ketchup. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

How to Make Tomato Ketchup (Stepwise Pictures)

Making Tomato puree

1)The first step in making tomato ketchup, is making tomato puree. Take few fresh tomatoes, wash them and dry them. Chop them roughly, take them in a blender and puree till smooth. If your tomatoes has lots of seeds, you can strain them through a large holed strainer.

Pro tip: Instead of going through all this steps, you can use store bought tomato puree as well.

2)Take the pureed tomato in a sauce pan.

Mixing Ketchup Ingredients

3)Now let’s add all the spices, flavourings and seasonings into the tomato puree. First add in salt.

4)Add in black pepper powder. You can use red chilli powder instead of black pepper powder.

5)Add in sugar. This recipe needs a good amount of sugar. You can replace sugar with jaggery, but it may change the colour of the sauce.

Depending on the the tomato variety you use, you might need to adjust sweetness.

8)Add in vinegar. This helps to balance the taste of the tomato ketchup, also preserves this for longer period.

Cooking Tomato Ketchup

11)Place the pot on heat. Cook on low medium heat until the tomato comes to a boil. Once it starts to boil, reduce the flame to low and cook on low heat stirring often for 15 to 20 minutes.

12)After 15 to 20 minutes of simmering. You can see the tomatoes had darkened in colour and the puree must have cooked.

13)The sauce looks thick and glossy. Allow this to cool completely, store in an air tight bottle.
