This white chocolate trash Chex mix is sweet and salty, can be made in minutes using only the microwave, and makes great neighbor or coworker holiday gifts!
For me, this is the best part of Christmas, the traditions that my kids love. Every year we have a pile of Christmas movies to get through, while I only care about 2, White Christmas and Elf. Our little guy is obsessed, No, OBSESSED with Elf and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the new one, not the old one). And over the years it has become something we all can’t wait to do because he’s SO EXCITED!
This last year he said, can we have a special Elf movie night with a Buddy the Elf snack?
HECK. YES. WE. CAN!
Now, I love to pair a movie with a savory snack like a bowl of popcorn topped with seasoned salt, but that’s not what Buddy would do. You can add maple syrup extract to the white chocolate if you want to, but I’ll be honest, it’s too much for me. Otherwise, just throw it all in there—and if you’re still holding on to leftover Halloween candy, go ahead and toss that in too! Buddy would approve of turning trick-or-treat loot into Christmas cheer, especially if it’s candy corn or anything sugary enough to make your teeth hurt. No judgments here!
When Do You Watch Your First Christmas Movie?
Hey, side note, when do you watch your first Christmas movie? We usually kick off the season with White Christmas on Thanksgiving, and I love that tradition!

What is Snack Mix?
Snack mix blends flavors and textures into one irresistible treat. It combines sweet, salty, crunchy, and everything in between. This version features white chocolate and festive goodies, making it the perfect snack to enjoy during your Christmas movie marathon. Trust me, it’s so good you’ll want to make it all year long!
Are Snack Mixes Good For You?
This Christmas White Chocolate Trash Chex Mix is an indulgent treat, but customize it to fit your dietary needs! Swap out the white chocolate for dark chocolate if you prefer a richer flavor or want to reduce sugar. If you’re looking for a healthier option, add nuts or seeds for a little extra protein and healthy fats.
What Ingredients Do I Need for White Chocolate Chex Mix?
You can change the ingredients for this Chex mix based on what you have on hand. That’s one reason it’s called “trash” Chex mix—it’s perfect for using up all those little leftover odds and ends in your pantry that you might otherwise throw away. I’ll share our favorite ingredients, but feel free to make it your own!
- Corn Chex
- Rice Chex
- Mini Pretzels
- Mini Vanilla Wafers
- Dry Roasted Peanuts
- M&Ms (plain)
- White Chocolate Chips (We prefer white chocolate chips or white chocolate melting wafers and not white almond bark. It’s just too waxy for us in this recipe.)
- Vegetable Oil
- Sprinkles
You can find the measurements for each ingredient in the recipe card below.
Ingredient Substitutions
This recipe is so versatile. As I mentioned above, you can swap any ingredient out. You can use this for any holiday too! Just change the M&Ms to the current holiday-specific bags at the grocery stores.
Here are a few ideas for other swaps:
- Cheerios
- Fritos
- Goldfish
- Popcorn
- Oyster Crackers
- Bagel Chips
- Reese’s Pieces (so fun for a fall or Thanksgiving batch!)
- Marshmallows
- Almonds
- Crispix
- Coconut flakes
- Cashews
How to Make White Chocolate Chex Mix
It takes just minutes to whip this recipe up! Here are the basic steps:
- Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl (except chocolate, oil, and sprinkles).
- Add the white chocolate and oil in a medium microwavable bowl and heat in 30-second intervals until totally smooth. Stir between each 30-second interval.
- Pour over the cereal mixture and gently toss to combine.
- INSIDER TIP: Another reason this is called “trash” Chex mix is because some people add all the ingredients to an unscented trash bag and shake it around to coat it with chocolate. Feel free to try that if you want!
