  • Oreo Cookies: Keep the filling in tact when crushing. You can also use different flavors of Oreos to change up the flavor. We do not recommend the Double or Mega Stuf Oreos.
  • Cream Cheese: Acts as a binder for the crushed cookies, adding creaminess and a slight tang to balance the sweetness so don’t skip! You can use reduced fat or fat-free cream cheese as a substitution.
  • Chocolate Chips: Depending on personal preference, you can use semi-sweet, dark, or milk chocolate chips.  For a different twist, white chocolate chips can be used, offering a sweeter, creamier coating. Chocolate melting wafers are always a great choice for this.

Melting Chocolate

Melting chocolate isn’t difficult, but overheating it can cause it to seize (become hard and unusable). To avoid this, melt your chocolate in the microwave in 30-second increments. Place chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl, heat for 30 seconds, stir, and repeat until fully melted. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler or a small crockpot for a steady, gentle melt.

Flavor Variations

Minty Twist: Add mint extract to the chocolate for a refreshing twist.

Orange Delight: Incorporate orange extract into the chocolate for a citrusy zing.

White Chocolate Elegance: Swap the regular chocolate chips for white chocolate for a creamy, luxurious variation.

Decorations

Adding a decorative touch to your Oreo truffles not only makes them visually appealing but also adds an extra layer of flavor and texture. Here are some simple yet creative ideas:

Colorful Sprinkles: A classic choice, use sprinkles that match the theme of your event or celebration. They add a playful pop of color.

Drizzled Chocolate: Melt a contrasting color of chocolate (like white chocolate over dark) and drizzle it over the truffles for an elegant finish.

Crushed Nuts: For added crunch and a gourmet touch, sprinkle finely chopped nuts like almonds or pecans over the truffles while the chocolate is still wet.

Cocoa or Powdered Sugar Dusting: For a sophisticated look, lightly dust the truffles with cocoa powder or powdered sugar using a sieve.

Crushed Cookie Topping: Sprinkle some finely crushed Oreo crumbs on top for a hint of the truffle’s flavor and a pleasing texture contrast.

Candy Melts: These come in a variety of colors and can be melted and used for dipping or drizzling over your truffles. They’re perfect for creating a colorful and festive look, suitable for holidays, themed parties, or simply to add a cheerful touch.

Edible Glitter or Gold Leaf: For a luxurious and festive touch, especially during the holidays or for special occasions, consider using edible glitter or gold leaf.

Remember, the key is to decorate the truffles while the chocolate coating is still wet so that your toppings adhere well. Enjoy personalizing each truffle to make them uniquely yours!

Storage and Freezing Instructions

Refrigerate leftover truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week away from heat and moisture.

Freeze truffles once the chocolate has been set. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet or plate lined with parchment paper and place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 1-2 hours, or until the truffles are firm. After the truffles are firm, transfer them into a freezer-safe container or a resealable plastic bag.

Thaw your desired number of truffles by moving them to the refrigerator and let them thaw gradually for several hours or overnight or let them sit for about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the room temperature.
