A stanDing ovation for our regular chart-topper and a firm favourite of our readers: Ding Bakery. Ding Bakery has become a Chinese New Year pineapple tarts legend. Their carefully handcrafted have the quintessential buttery richness and delicate texture that we all look for in the perfect pineapple tart. Part of the reason is that each batch is baked just before delivery, a massive logistical achievement in itself.

2. Pineapple Tarts Singapore

Pineapple Tarts Singapore is the award-winning bakery known for its 100% homemade and handmade tarts. Experts at the traditional pineapple tart and CNY goodies, they also have a cheeky range of creative pineapple tart flavours. Find them in the lead-up to CNY 2025 at Vivocity, NEX, Velocity, Jurong Point, TANG Plaza, and Takashimaya.

In their range of perennial favourites and most popular new flavours are:

  • Melt in Your Mouth Pineapple Tarts – 24 pcs, ~460g (S$23.90, U.P.: S$49.80)
  • Cheezylicious – Cheese Pineapple Tarts – 28 pcs, ~460g (S$25.90, U.P.: S$53.80)
  • YOlkLO – Salted Egg Pineapple Tarts – 24 pcs, ~460g (S$27.90, U.P.: S$57.80)
  • Siao LA – Mala Pineapple Tarts – 24 pcs, ~460g (S$25.90, U.P.: S$53.80)

The Melt in Your Mouth Pineapple Tarts are, by far, the most well-known, and for good reason. At their literal heart is the bakery’s signature pineapple filling, known for its perfect balance between sweet and sour. To get to it, you have to go through the wonderfully buttery golden crust. Together, they make one of the best pineapple tarts we’ve ever tasted.

If you prefer savoury notes, why not get them from the richness of cheese? Cheezylicious cheese pineapple tarts magnify the flavours of the crust by infusing the addictive crust with parmesan. This will bring a smile to your face even before you say “cheese”!

If there are 2 flavours that have been adopted to all our favourite foods, they have to be salted egg and mala. For that Pineapple Tarts SG has created the YOlkLO Salted Egg Pineapple Tarts and Siao LA Mala Pineapple Tarts.

In YOlkLO, delicious salted egg yolks are blended perfectly into the tender buttery crust. If that isn’t creative enough, the Siao LA imagines mala hotpot as a dessert. Curious? We were, and it turned out to be a surprisingly good culinary experience.

One thing to note is that Pineapple Tarts SG bakes in limited batches every Chinese New Year. While that’s an excellent way to ensure that the same high standard is maintained from the first tart baked to the last, it also means that it can be difficult to get your hands on a set.

This year, that includes the Melt in Your Mouth Pineapple Tarts (S$19.90, U.P.: S$39.80), Melt in Your Mouth Open Face Pineapple Tarts (S$19.90, U.P.: S$39.80), Premium Cranberry Pineapple Tarts (S$19.90, U.P.: S$41.80), Melt in Your Mouth Earl Grey Pineapple Tarts (S$19.90, U.P.: S$41.80) and Melt in Your Mouth Sour Cream Pineapple Tarts (S$19.90, U.P.: S$41.80).

What can we say about the Melt in Your Mouth Pineapple Tarts? The OG CNY pineapple tart was what first established the Wang Lai Bakery name; they remain arguably the best CNY snack till today. The Melt in Your Mouth Open Face Pineapple Tarts are its bolder cousin, flaunting golden jam to rack up the temptation.

Not quite so traditional but equally delicious are the Premium Cranberry Pineapple Tarts, an antioxidant-laden alternative for the health conscious. The subtle change of flavour successfully reimagines how a CNY pineapple tart should taste.

2 new flavours make their debut this year: Melt in Your Mouth Earl Grey Pineapple Tarts and Melt in Your Mouth Sour Cream Pineapple Tarts. Tea aficionados will gravitate towards the former but I cannot get enough of the infusion of sourness with the latter. You have to try it!

Find them in the lead-up to CNY 2025 at Vivocity, NEX, Velocity, Jurong Point, and TANG Plaza.

4. D’Pastry

D’Pastry was founded in 2005 as a humble home-based business but their recipes are generations old. We knew them for their puffs, crepes, pastries, cookies and cakes but this year, they sprung us with pineapple tarts that blew us away!

Intrigued, we dug further and found that D’Pastry won the title of Singapore’s Top 3 Pineapple Tarts in 2015 and was recognised in 2014 by the Sunday Times for having the Best Undiscovered CNY Snacks.

They have 2 varieties of pineapple tarts and the first is their Open-faced Pineapple Tarts (笑口常开). This name, “xiao kou chang kai translates to being happy and smiling often. The other is the Closed Pineapple Tarts (圆圆满满), “yuan yuan man man” that translates to feeling complete, a sense of fullness.

Delightfully delicate, both versions have a crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture. I love the subtly sweet pineapple filling with its pronounced tang. D’Pastry pineapple tarts do not contain any preservatives, pork, lard or alcohol.

For over a quarter of a century, Cedele has been wowing us with its delicious fare, prepared according to their ethos of ‘Eat Well, Be Well’. Come Chinese New Year with its alluring array of deliciously sinful snacks, Cedele gives you a healthier version of your favourites without sacrificing flavour.

Our top recommendation for CNY snacks is the Cedele Pineapple Pocket Pie (S$38). Its lightly sweetened pineapple jam sits prettily in the centre of hand-rolled buttery, melt-in-your-mouth pastry. Made using fine butter and unrefined sugar but without baking powder, it’s a wonderful meld of tradition and healthy eating.

A new addition to their CNY snacks range has us mesmerised. The Hae Bee Hiam Crunch Cookies (S$35) kept our tongues guessing, intrigued by the lilting sweet and savoury flavours. There were even peeks of chilli powder, and it all came together wonderfully with the umami-rich dried shrimp. These cookies are baked with plant-based oil and crushed cornflakes, without any baking powder or butter.

Besides the traditional favourites, Cedele also has unique handcrafted breads and bakes, whole cakes, butter cakes and Ogura cakes.

Cedele is giving discounts on their range of cookie bundles. Buy 5 Cookie Tins and get 8% off or buy 10 Cookie Tins to save 18% off the regular price. This promotion is valid till 12 Feb 2025, while stocks last.

You can save even more with their Early Bird promo. Make your purchases before 5 Jan 2025 and get 20% off all Lunar New Year Specials, excluding Cookie Tins.

6. HarriAnns Nonya Table

Peranakan cuisine’s unique blend of Chinese and Malay culinary traditions adds wonderful new flavours to otherwise familiar tastes. In Singapore, our love of Peranakan food extends to CNY snacks; the festive range from home-grown brand HarriAnns Nonya Table is the perfect example.

HarriAnns Nonya Table started off in the 1940s as a humble push-cart and has grown into a mini-chain of cosy cafes around the island. What hasn’t changed is their use of premium ingredients such as SCS butter to give every snack a smooth full-bodied taste and fragrance.

You can experience this for yourself with their best-sellers that include the Signature Pineapple Balls/Flowers (S$28.80), Kueh Bangkit (S$25.80) and Love Letters (S$26.80).

For me, the pineapple tarts are the best of the lot. Each one is hand-crafted to reward you with a hint of tang that balances out its subtle sweetness. It’s the kind of snack that you close your eyes to appreciate fully, smiling at the experience.

Allocating first place to the pineapple tarts was not easy because the Kueh Bangkit is done so well, too. Pop one in your mouth and savour the lovely release of flavour from coconut cream batter as each piece dissolves on your tongue. Heavenly.

Love Letters are my childhood favourite and I was so happy to taste the HarriAnns Nonya Table version. I don’t know how they get each one so crispy and so thin but eating them was a joy!

Besides these classics, HarriAnns Nonya Table also introduces new snack flavours every Chinese New Year. You can sample them at their many locations and even stop by for their signature Peranakan fare and artisanal Nonya Kueh. Their rendition of iconic Peranakan savoury dishes such as Ayam Buah Keluak, Nyonya Laksa and Meesiam keep fans returning all year round.

7. Bengawan Solo

Another of Singapore’s most trusted and well-known bakeries is Bengawan Solo. From a single store in 1979, it has expanded to almost 50 in tiny Singapore. They are obviously doing something right and they definitely do CNY pineapple tarts right.

The Bengawan Solo Pineapple Tarts (330g) (S$28) box is great for gifting with its elegant octagonal shape and restrained presentation. For even more enjoyment, there is a Pineapple Tarts (660g) (S$52) box, too.

Inside the buttery melt-in-your-mouth pastry is pineapple jam made from sweet honey pineapples, slow-cooked to caramelisation. Bengawan Solo makes its tarts in an elongated shape. It’s something that I personally enjoy because it lets me prolong my tasting pleasure rather than devour one in each mouthful.

You can also get Coffee Almond Oat Cookies (Tin) (S$28.50), Indonesian Kueh Bangkit (Tray) (S$26.80), Macadamia Sugee Cookies (Tin) (S$30.80) and Sugee Cookies (Tin) (S$26.50) at Bengawan Solo.

8. Kwan Pastry

The cream always rises to the top, and that’s how Kwan Pastry went from a home-based enterprise 2 decades ago to a cherished local name. Fans flock to the cosy outlet in City Plaza for a taste of their premium quality festive snacks, including their signature Sakura Pineapple Tart (S$23, 28 pieces).

No, they didn’t choose the pretty ‘Sakura’ name; Kwan Pastry’s pineapple tarts are actually shaped like the delicate five-petalled cherry blossom flower! Carefully crafted with meticulous care, these tarts have been delighting their customers for over 20 years.

Buttery as can be, the crust dissolves deliciously on your tongue even as the rich tang of the pineapple centre regales your taste buds.

We love how Kwan Pastry’s Sakura Pineapple Tarts stand out from the common flat round or spherical shapes. While they don’t taste like sakura, the sakura-shaped tarts are a feast for both the eyes and palate.

These pineapple tarts are perfect as the centrepiece of your own celebration table but they do just as well as fine gifts for beloved family and important business associates. If you do want to buy them as gifts, Kwan Bakery is offering free delivery on orders of 20 tubs or more.

Apart from the tarts, we also recommend their Almond Cookies (vegetarian friendly), crunch-packed Cashew Cookies and ever-crispy Mixed Nuts Chips.
