Disagreement spurs sister of Rui Ji Chicken Rice to go solo

Must Try

For a dish as delicious— and acclaimed —as chicken rice, there is no such thing as too many stalls. Well, adding to Singapore’s ever-growing list of great chicken rice stalls is Moh Swee Kee. With traditional Hainanese chicken rice as their speciality, the stall opened in People’s Park Food Centre on 20 Mar 2024.

But wait — does the name ‘Swee Kee’ ring a bell? If so, you’re probably thinking of the (now-defunct) legendary Swee Kee Chicken Rice. Moh Swee Kee is helmed by none other than Jass Lee, the great-grandniece of Swee Kee’s original owner, Moh Lee Twee.

Jass explained that the stall’s name is an ode to her granduncle, the man who instilled in her the very craft.

Traditional Rui Ji Chicken Rice - Jass & Joseph

There’s a chance you might recognise Jass herself, too. Together with her stepbrother, Joseph Tan, she’s part of the duo that kickstarted Traditional Rui Ji Chicken Rice in 2023. The joint venture recently made headlines for its opening—and sadly, closing—of its flagship restaurant, which employed handicapped workers.

Although Rui Ji currently still has 2 other operational stalls, Jass made the decision to go solo after a disagreement with her brother over the culinary direction of the business. Jass divulged that she disagreed with Joseph’s choice to incorporate menu items that do not align with the traditional style of offerings that she personally favours.

And so, she kickstarted Moh Swee Kee. The stall has a simple menu with just steamed chicken that patrons can enjoy Whole (S$32), Half (S$17) or in various Sets (from S$5).

You can customise your meal with add-ons as well, such as Gizzards/Liver (S$1/S$2/S$3) and Vegetables/Beansprouts (S$3/S$4). You can even enjoy your rice in the form of Chicken Rice Balls (S$1).

The stall is currently also in the midst of obtaining Halal certification. While Jass revealed that business hasn’t been the best, she promises that she’ll “bring the flavours”. Hopefully, that’s reason enough for you to swing by!
