It’s unfortunate to see how many hawker closures happen these days. In a recent Facebook post published in Can Eat! SG, Golden Mile Food Centre’s hidden chicken rice stall, Thailand Chicken Rice will temporarily close its doors on 14 Dec 2024 and reopen 6 Jan 2025.
Ran by lady boss May Lee, the stall has been delighting customers with her Thai-style Hainanese chicken rice. While we know working as a hawker is already a challenging feat, it doesn’t get any easier for May as she suffers from hand tremors due to a kidney-related condition she was born with.
Despite this, she continues to push through with her kind-hearted spirit, giving customers affordable and generously portioned plates of chicken rice. Customers can savour 1 Plate of Chicken Rice for either S$4 or S$5, with her popular, sought-after Thai chilli sauce made from scratch daily and a bowl of clear soup.
While not explicitly stated the reason for Thailand Chicken Rice’s temporary closure, it does seem that her condition does not seem to be improving as the years go by, with her hand pain becoming a bit too unbearable. Amidst the extremely competitive hawker business, May has also given away free portions of rice and her special chilli sauce!
While this isn’t a goodbye, this may be sad news for fans of her Thai-style chicken rice. With Thailand Chicken Rice’s temporary closure date slated for 14 Dec, if you happen to be in the area, let’s continue to show her support from now until then!
