What’s in This Honey Garlic Chicken Recipe?
- Soy Sauce: Adds savory, umami flavor. I prefer to use low-sodium soy sauce, but regular will also work.
- Honey: The brand doesn’t really matter, but make sure your honey is good quality. If you use a cheaper bottle, your sauce might taste very sweet, but lack in actual honey flavor.
- Rice Vinegar: Adds a sweet and acidic flavor. White wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar both work well in a pinch.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic gives this chicken a punch of savory flavor.
- Chicken: I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts, but thighs also work.
- Flour: All-purpose flour helps the chicken brown and the sauce thicken.
- Cornstarch: Helps the sauce thicken up.

How to Store and Reheat
Store leftover honey garlic chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating in a skillet set over medium-low heat.
Notes and Tips
- Don’t skip the searing step! Searing the chicken until it’s browned on both sides is very important to the texture and savory flavor of the breast. If you skip right to simmering, you’ll lose out on a lot.
- When dredging the chicken breasts, be sure to really cover them fully. If some spots are unevenly dredged, the chicken won’t cook properly.
- If your sauce is too thin, whisk more cornstarch and water together. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the pan slowly, just a little bit at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
- Make sure your chicken breasts reach an internal temperature of 165°F before serving!
