The Easiest Onion Dip Recipe

There are two steps to this sour cream and onion dip recipe. Two! With a mere handful of ingredients and just two steps, there’s really no reason NOT to make this dip. It’s almost as good as my French onion dip, but with a fraction of the work (no need to caramelize onions)!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • The perfect last-minute appetizer or quick snack! It takes seconds to stir together using ingredients you should already have in your pantry.
  • Only 6 ingredients and no unnecessary additions like soy sauce, sugar, mustard, etc.
  • Easy to make with no chopping or stovetop required. If you know how to stir, you can make this recipe!
  • Tastes good with veggies, chips, or pretzels. We especially love using wavy or ripple chips with this dip for that extra crunch.
  • Cleaner than your average dip. While many dips (including my favorite dill dip recipe) are mayo based, mayo has a fair share of additives to it. Sour cream, on the other hand, should have only one ingredient: cream! Add a few spices and you have an incredible and flavorful dip that will rival any other at the Big Game. I also don’t mind serving this to my kids to help get them to eat their veggies.

Ingredients

Just a few ingredients here today! I’ll review them briefly before we get into the super easy recipe.

  • Sour cream. Use full-fat sour cream for best results. I talk about substituting Greek yogurt in the FAQ section below.
  • Spices. Including dried minced onion, onion powder, parsley, and just a bit of garlic powder. Hopefully most of these are already waiting for you in your spice drawer!
  • Salt. Absolutely essential for flavor, this adds depth and enhances the other flavors of the dip. I just use regular table salt (fine sea salt would also work).
  • Fresh chives or scallions. These are optional, but add some color and freshness to the dip. I tend to prefer chives, as they blend into the dip nicely.

SAM’S TIP: If you’d like, you can replace the dried parsley with a tablespoon of finely minced fresh parsley. We typically just stick to the dried version though–it keeps this recipe nice and easy!

How to Make It

  1. Stir together all ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Cover and chill in the fridge so the flavors have time to develop.
  3. Stir, then garnish as desired (we like fresh chives or scallions!) and serve with your favorite dippers–I include a few suggestions below.

So that’s quite a few words to say “stir and serve”. That’s it, guys. It’s really that simple.

SAM’S TIP: My… professional recommendation is to chill the dip before serving per the recipe, as the flavor will develop as it sits. However, do I obsessively taste-test immediately after making it because it’s also good right away? Yes!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream?

I haven’t tried this, but I suspect a full-fat, plain Greek yogurt will work just fine. The flavor will be a bit different–not quite as rich and creamy–but it should still taste great!

If you try this, I’d love to know how it turns out for you!

How long does onion dip last?

This dip will last for up to 5 days when stored in the fridge in an airtight container. The flavor is best within the first day or two though!

I do not recommend freezing this dip, as I think the texture would suffer when thawed.

What pairs well with sour cream and onion dip?

Potato chips (or kettle chips), pretzels, and fresh veggies like carrots, cucumber, snacking peppers or celery are our favorite dippers. I even enjoy it with pretzel bites!

If you have any other dipper suggestions, I’d love to hear them in the comments!
