Stuffed Pizza Dough (or Stromboli)) has always been a family favorite along with Mom’s Sausage Roll, and we just love a variety of fillings (you can choose from our suggestions below).
The pizza dough is easy to make from scratch, however, you can use any store-bought or your own delicious dough recipe if you prefer.
Stuffed Pizza Dough is served warm from the oven with a side of marinara sauce, for dipping it into.

Basic Steps to for Making a Spinach Roll Stuffed Pizza Dough
- Saute the spinach and add the ingredients of garlic and red pepper flakes
- Make or buy the pizza dough and make sure it is at room temperature or in a warm place as you make the filling
- Roll out the dough
- Add the spinach, and sliced cheese you prefer, and roll it up seam-side down
- Place on a baking sheet and let rest for around 30 minutes
- Brush with egg wash and sprinkle the top with grated cheese and herbs if preferred
- Bake at 400 degrees until brown on top
- Optional: all stuffed rolls can be brushed with egg wash before baking, sprinkled with dry herbs, granulated garlic powder and cheese on top
Tips
- Use deli cheese thickly cut slices of your favorite cheese (we used pepper jack)
- Always keep the dough at least 1/2 inch in thickness so the filling won’t poke through the dough
- If you are a meat lover, add cooked meats of any kind (IE pepperoni, bacon, and sausage are good choices)
- Substitute another sauteed green you may prefer
- This roll can be made with a variety of mix-in additions
- Frozen bread dough is not recommended it has too much moisture in it
- Bake until the outside of the roll is browned at 400 degrees
- For a glistening sheen beat an egg and brush before baking
- These can be made ahead of time for parties and frozen for up to 3 months.
- Reheat wrapped in foil in the oven or in the air fryer for 2 to 3Â minutes if you want a crispier outside crust

Spinach Roll Stuffed Pizza Dough
This is a basic recipe for pizza dough, we have made many different filling combinations to add and suggestions to tailor your roll however your family prefers.
Pizza dough is very versatile when it comes to stuffing it’s just like having a sandwich stuffed inside bread then just slice and eat it.
This spinach roll is perfect for lunches, picnic outings, and bringing food to the beach, plus tastes great even cold!
Spinach Roll Stuffed Pizza Dough

Homemade pizza dough filled with sauteed spinach stuffed inside baked, then sliced eaten warm.
Ingredients
- 1 pound of pizza dough homemade or store-bought (Italian dough, not the frozen bread dough loaves that have milk in it)
- 16 ounces of baby spinach washed and blotted dry
- 3 tablespoons olive oil for sauteing the spinach
- 3 cloves of fresh garlic minced
- red pepper flakes to taste ( a few dashes for heat)
- salt and pepper to taste
- around 1/4 cup of grated Pecorino Romano Cheese (more for the top if desired
- thick slices of cheese (we used pepper jack)
- other cheese ideas: mozzarella, provolone, Havarti, cheddar, and kind you prefer)
- Garnish topping: egg wash, herbs of choice, more grated cheese
- Serve with warm marinara (this is optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large frying pan, heat the oil and saute the garlic until golden around 2 minutes.
- Add the spinach and saute just until wilted, add the salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste.
- Remove most of the liquid in the pan and blot the drain with paper towels.
- Cool completely before adding to the dough.
- Note: Too much liquid will make the dough rip open.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangular shape.
- Place the spinach into the center spreading out not to close to the edges.
- Add the sliced cheese grated cheese, as shown in the photos on the spinach.
- Fold in the sides and roll up like a jelly roll.
- Spray the top with a little cooking spray or brush with olive oil.
- Let rise in a warm place for around 35 minutes.
- Brush with egg wash and add anything you like on top,
- Bake in the 400 degrees oven until brown on top around 40 to 45 minutes.
- Serve warm and if preferred dip in warm marinara sauce.
