2. Altered States: Experiments in Moving Image

Things to do in December - Altered States exhibition

Altered States: Experiments in Moving Image is an exhibition on experimental filmmaking. These films are captured using 8mm or 16mm film. It is a series of artists and filmmakers who take to analogue filmmaking to express evolutions in nature that reflect our humanity.

In a world increasingly dependent on AI, curators Jerome Chee and Rachel Wong wanted to go back to the basics. Nothing can compare to organically creating visual spectacles using a mix of art and science, intertwining them into a singular piece of art. It is an affirmation that man-made art is here to stay.

There are 4 different installations from 5 local and international artists. The techniques used by these artists vary from textiles to manipulating the physical film stock. Each exhibition displays a unique style of analogue filmmaking and expresses a message about life, change, human nature and death.

You can click here to read more on the Altered States exhibition. Otherwise, visit the Art Science Museum website to find out more.

Created in collaboration with Mandai X, this program makes conservation part of the fun. It’s a series of hands-on missions through the sun, sea and surf made even more captivating using augmented reality (AR).

Watch the little ones tear through the real and virtual world to emerge as conservation warriors. But just as important is the development of future-ready skills using the C.O.U.R.A.G.E. framework that creates independent, creative and resourceful leaders. Some of the highlights include:

  •         A mission to help Coco the tortoise save threatened marine habitats
  •         Interactive digital storytelling with the Explore the Magic Valley app

Take full advantage of the Mini Club Med+ program to give the entire family the mix of fun, entertainment and relaxation that they need.

For that, Club Med Bintan gives sun worshippers a playground that includes a mile and a half of white sand beach and 2 pools. Then, there is the gamut of sports from tennis and badminton to archery and pétanque.

The Singapore International Film Festival returns this year with its 35th edition. From 28 Nov to 8 Dec, catch 105 films from across 45 countries. This festival champions Asian cinema and creative voices, with 80% of the lineup consisting of Asian talents.

This year’s films are tackling prevalent issues such as AI and its influence on the lives of artists and filmmakers across the globe. Yeo Siew Hua’s Stranger Eyes (2024), the festival’s opener, highlights the struggles of living in a world of constant surveillance.

Explore films under these 9 categories: Asian Feature Film Competition, Audience Choice Award, Foreground, Horizon, Landmark, Singapore Panorama, Southeast Asian Short Film Competition, Standpoint, and Undercurrent.

I felt the need to include this in the list because this film highlights the capabilities of our homegrown filmmakers. By supporting events like this, we are able to cultivate our local talent further and make a mark in the film industry regionally and internationally.
