Woodlands Pasar Malam returns with Japanese taiyaki & Ringo carnival

Must Try

If you stay in the North, Woodlands Pasar Malam has returned to the open space beside Woodlands MRT and Causeway Point from 1 to 30 June. It’s so big, it’s difficult to miss it.

The gigantic pasar malam houses more than 50 Food & Beverage stalls, a large dining area, an Uncle Ringo carnival, claw machines and a compartmentalised shopping area.

What’s there to eat?

Feeling peckish, I ordered 1 Thai seafood fried rice (S$6) from Siam Thailand Food. While the servings were generous and the rice was fragrant, the dish was quite bland as the vegetables were quite dry.

If you are a fan of Thai food, you might also want to check out a neighbouring Thai stall. The store sold dishes such as Thai Mango Sweet Rice (S$6) and Mango Salad (S$5).

Walking further into Woodlands Pasar Malam, what grabbed my attention was the variety of assorted grilled street food at Satay Kak Pah. I ordered 1 Garlic Cheese Prawn for S$6.

The dish fell below my expectations, although it was slightly better-tasting than the Thai seafood fried rice. The garlic was overpowering and left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth.

To top off the meal, I ordered one Vanilla Blue (S$3) with a scoop of ice cream (S$1) from one of the stores selling assorted drinks. Unfortunately, it was diluted and lacked the sweetness you would expect from a flavoured condiment. The ice cream was forgettable, too.

What’s new at Woodlands Pasar Malam?

Several Japanese taiyaki stores popped up at Woodlands Pasar Malam. The stores sell the fish-shaped pastries with assorted fillings (red bean, milk, strawberry etc.). I got a taiyaki from Satay Kak Pah (where I bought the garlic cheese prawn from) for S$3.

While there was not as much milk filling as I would have liked, it was savoury. The batter was well-prepared and didn’t crumble as I bit into it. It was also sweet and crisp. The taiyaki, which served as a filling dessert, was arguably the best dish I ate at Woodlands Pasar Malam on the day.
