With the rise of Nanyang-inspired kopitiams like Great Nanyang Heritage Cafe and WangLee Cafe, JUwei “Old Nanyang Coffee Shop” at Clarke Quay has hopped onto the bandwagon… or should I say rickshaw? HAHA.
According to a staff member at the hip spot, although JUwei has been around for a while, this is a new kopitiam concept, distinct from their Sichuan cuisine restaurant. For our midnight feasters, good news, your next supper joint is open tills 2am.
With every dish being “a celebration of nostalgia that extends beyond taste,” the coffee shop reflects old-school charm through neon signs, mosaic walls and marble-accented furniture. If you would like to ease into the retro vibes, check out JUGe, the KTV and Live Band upstairs.
Back to what you are here for, set your eyes on their extensive menu which features a solid selection from breakfast sets to zi char mains.
Dropping by in the morning? Start your day with a Kaya Butter Toast Set (S$5.90)Â that includes a piping cuppa’ kopi, gooey half-boiled eggs and the ubiquitous Kaya Butter Toast crisped to perfection. Do note that all JU’s Toasts are only available until 7pm though!
Fret not, you can always munch on some Mini Youtiao with Kaya Dipping (S$4.50) or Traditional Ipoh Cheong Fun (S$5.90). As an avid fan of traditional pastries, I am interested in the Coconut Shredded Tart (S$2.20)Â which sounds like a sweet dream.
Their One Tray Meals are a must-try. Think Hainanese Chicken Rice Combo (S$9.90) and Nasi Lemak with Crispy Fried Chicken Whole Leg Combo (S$12.90). Served with sides such as keropok, ikan bilis, eggs, peanuts and assorted veggies, the latter boasts a juicy ayam goreng berempah on a mound of fragrant rice.
I got my eye on their wok-kissed Penang Char Kuey Teow (S$10.90) that complements a share of savoury Red Fried Pork Belly (S$8.90) marinated in addictive nan ru.
You cannot call it a meal without dessert. Sweet tooths enjoy 50% off all desserts from 10pm onwards! Care for a refreshing bowl of Durian Chendol (S$7.50)? Now wash it all down with the crowd-favourite Hor Ka Sai (S$4.50), which is Milo infused in a rich blend of Nanyang kopi.
Well, don’t say bojio!
